Color and form. Light and shadow. These make the drama and sense of awe that I feel from the natural world around me. The wonder of the earth and all that grows from it is breath-taking to me, and I feel compelled to capture the intensity of color and the contrasts these wonders provide.
Flowers have a drama of their own. The forms, shapes and values often create an abstract composition, yet lead to realism in the work. But that remains for the viewer’s eye. The sharp contrasts, shadows and line contribute to the brightness and intensity of the work, even when I use a limited palette. The same characteristics can be seen in the still life paintings. These make use of objects that I find to have inherent beauty, and colors and forms that play against each other to create what I hope is a feast for the eyes.
. . .
Dottie earned a B.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in art. She married, raised a family, and was involved in everything but art for many years. In 1967, Dottie got her MSSW from the University of Tennessee and worked in mental health until her retirement in 1988. After this, she had many family and community commitments. In 1993 time opened up and she jumped into the opening by returning to her love of art.
Largely self-taught, she took some classes at the Memphis College of Art and started painting. After a cautious start, Dottie has shown in local, regional and national shows. She has also had several one and two-person shows, and now devotes most of her time to her art.
